# Six decks in one shoe: what 312 cards mean at the blackjack table

Card Lounge blackjack does not deal from a single deck. Six standard decks are shuffled together into one shoe, and every card you and the dealer receive comes off it. What does that mean for the cards you see? Mostly simple counting, worth doing once.

As always at this table: play chips only, with no value, and nothing can be bought or won. This is not a card-counting system or betting advice, just what is in the shoe and how the game handles it.

## Counting the shoe

- **312 cards.** Six decks of 52.
- **24 of every rank.** Four suits times six decks, so there are 24 Aces, 24 sevens, 24 Queens and so on.
- **Six copies of every card.** There are six 7♣ in the shoe, so the same card can turn up twice in one hand.
- **96 ten-value cards.** The 10, J, Q and K all count 10: 4 ranks × 24 = 96, which is 96 ÷ 312 = 4 ÷ 13 ≈ 30.8% of the shoe.
- **24 Aces.** That is 1 in 13, about 7.7%, the same share as each single value from 2 to 9.

So ten is four times as common as any other single value. In a fresh shoe it is the most likely value for the next card, though still less likely than not: 4 in 13.

## How a hand is dealt

The cards come off the shoe in a fixed order: one to you, one face up to the dealer, a second to you, and the dealer's second card face down. Your hits come next, then the dealer's draws.

The dealer checks for blackjack when the face-up card is an Ace or a ten-value card; if the face-down card completes a blackjack, the hand ends right there. Otherwise the dealer turns it over after you finish, draws to 16, and stands on all 17s, including soft 17.

A dealer may take several cards in one hand. You stand on 10♥ 7♠, a hard 17. The dealer has 5♣ and 6♦, a hard 11, and draws 3♥ (14), then A♠ (the Ace counts 1, since 11 would make 25, so 15), then 2♣ (17), and stands. Your 17 against the dealer's 17 is a push. That hand used seven cards.

## When the shoe is reshuffled

Before each new hand is dealt, the game checks how many cards are left. If fewer than 78 remain, it switches to a freshly shuffled shoe of 312. 78 is exactly a quarter of 312.

- With 78 cards left, the next hand is still dealt from the old shoe.
- With 77 left, the shoe is reshuffled first.

So at least 235 cards are dealt from every shoe, and the last 77 or fewer are never played. A hand uses at least four cards, so one shoe can last at most 59 hands. Deal again after a finished hand keeps using the same shoe; pressing Deal on the start screen begins with a newly shuffled one.

## How the mix shifts as cards are dealt

Two hands from a fresh shoe:

**Hand 1.** You get 10♣ 6♦, and the dealer shows 9♥. You hit and draw 5♠ for 21. When a hit brings you to exactly 21, the game stands for you. The dealer turns over K♠, has 19, stands, and you win. Five cards have gone, two of them ten-value: 94 of the remaining 307 are ten-value, 30.6%.

**Hand 2.** You get 4♥ 7♣, and the dealer shows 10♦. The dealer checks for blackjack and play continues. You double and draw Q♥ for 21; the dealer turns over 8♠, has 18 and stands, and you win. Five more cards, two more ten-value: 92 of 302, about 30.5%.

Two hands moved the ten-value share from 30.8% to 30.5%. Near the end of a shoe the swings can be larger, because fewer cards remain: with 80 left, 4 in 13 would be about 24.6 ten-value cards, but the actual number could be 32 (40%) or 16 (20%), depending on what has been dealt. The game does not show you the rest of the shoe, and the Hint looks only at your hand, the dealer's face-up card and whether Double is available.

## Reading the dealer's face-up card

You can still use the cards you see. From a fresh shoe, you hold 9♣ 7♦ and the dealer shows A♠. The 309 unseen cards include the face-down card, and 96 are ten-value, so the dealer has blackjack with chance 96 ÷ 309 ≈ 31.1%. If you hold K♥ Q♣ instead, two tens are already out: 94 ÷ 309 ≈ 30.4%. With a ten-value card showing, the face-down card would have to be an Ace: 24 ÷ 309 ≈ 7.8% when you hold no Ace yourself.

Insurance is not offered, so this is simply knowing what to expect.

## Try it

1. How many Queens are in the shoe, and how many of them are Q♥?
2. You press Deal again with 78 cards left. Is the shoe reshuffled? And with 77?
3. From a fresh shoe you hold 10♠ 10♦ and the dealer shows 6♣. How many ten-value cards are among the unseen cards?

Answers: 1) 24 Queens, 6 of them Q♥. 2) No; yes. 3) 94 of 309.
